In Bach’s celebrated chorale cantata Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, the voices of the damned quake in fear of the Last Judgement, just as in Desmarest’s De Profundis or Lully’s spine chilling Dies Irae. Les Surprises demonstrate fear of death exists in every age, giving voice to these baroque masters, together with Hersant’s contemporary Psaume CXXX.
