A chastening journey between light and darkness

In 1599 – as the Renaissance gave way to the Baroque – Emilio de' Cavalieri set poignant texts from the Book of Lamentations to moving music, with bright contrasts and with intense colours. It was a time of experimentation, and not just in music, because the burgeoning of modern science was turning conceptions of man and God upside down. With Cavalieri's Lamentationes Hieremiae prophetae, Vincent Dumestre and his Poème Harmonique recapture the overwhelming success of their debut years, with a new line-up brimming with today's talent.
